Reduction of more than 50% of the Time to market through Tests with High automation for the ATM channel.

Modernization of electronic channels in Grupo Bancolombia, the most sustainable bank in the world in 2020, according to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.

The challenge of achieving quality quickly to get to market on time

The bank acquires a new SWITCH to enhance its electronic channels, this implies migrating the transactions of all its channels to be processed in the new SWITCH, which could generate cost overruns and idle times while the migration stabilizes.

In traditional Testing and Automation schemes, the QA process would have taken away the competitive advantage when it came to production. That is why the bank looked for how to achieve a production start in much less time, with the greatest possible coverage and guaranteeing the desired quality, finding in HDI finding in HDI the strategic ally.

The solution: balance between quality and speed with high automation

Grupo HDI implemented a High-Test Automation model in ATMs, where robots simulate the users who make transactions, while STARC (HDI’s High Automation tool) validated the transaction processing in all layers of the payment system: ATM, SWITCH, Authorizer, Backend, Database; generating automatic reports with the corresponding validations.

Test Cycle

A test cycle lasting 3 weeks went to 3 days.

Coverage

Greater coverage in its tests and opportunity in decision-making and adjustments in its development process.

High Speed

A test case that used to go from 25 to 30 minutes is now carried out between 3 and 5 minutes, achieving quality production in less time than estimated.

Staff

These execution cycles are assisted by two specialized technicians to respond to any mechanical problem or alert to solve situations “in situ” and give continuity to the cycle.

Execution of a test case.

Previously it was 25 to 30 minutes and with the high automation of HDI it was only 4.5 to 5 minutes. Generating a saving of 83.33%.

Execution of a total test cycle.

Before, it took about 3 weeks (15 business days) and with Grupo HDI’s High Automation it took just 3 days, generating a saving of 80% in this process.

With High Automation, the accumulated costs of executions have a lower slope than other approaches: Manual and traditional automation.

With High Automation, the unit cost per test case executed decreases as new execution cycles occur. Other approaches stay at the same unit cost or worse, raise it.

* “One of the great challenges we had in the Switch project was to find a way to ensure quality for tests associated with ATMs with an automatic approach, starting from the physical interaction with the ATMs and following the complete business flow (E2E), not manually as was customary to ensure quality on physical devices. For this, together with our partner HDI, we developed a solution where robotics played a fundamental role. In this implementation, robots (6) were put into operation that allowed the interaction with the ATMs and through Starc (HDI software, for the development of automation) to orchestrate the entire E2E flow, in this way it was possible to test in non-productive environments an approximate of 6,820 automated test cases out of 8,327 in total, for the different brands and technologies, with a high level of test case reuse, around 79%. With this solution, it was possible to plan continuous test executions through the robots, in terms of time, we went from executing a complete test cycle of 3 weeks to 3 days, managing to put, at the end of this path that began in 2018, a solution in production that allowed us to modernize our electronic channels.”
